Minority athletes aim to change biased views through their Olympic experiences

Before she dazzled the audience with her incredible moves at the Paris Olympics, Logan Edra, also known as B-Girl Logistx, displayed intense focus. As Team USA’s youngest breaker, Edra felt the weight of representing her Filipino heritage on a grand stage. Embracing her cultural background on such a prestigious platform was a significant moment for her.

Moving on from the b-girl competition in Paris, Edra now embraces her role in the Paralympics, where athletes not only carry the hopes of their nations for victory but also the responsibility of showcasing their identities and cultures. Despite not advancing further in the Olympics, Edra’s exceptional skills and current No. 10 world ranking have brought her well-deserved recognition in the breaking community.

Positive exposure through sporting events can help combat prejudice, as demonstrated by research on soccer’s impact on Islamophobia in British society following Mohamed Salah’s success. Embracing diversity and inclusivity in sports has the power to challenge stereotypes and foster respect among spectators.

Minority athletes, unintentionally but significantly, become symbols of entire communities. Icons like Gabby Douglas, Simone Biles, and Sunisa Lee have inspired participation and sparked discussions on representation and diversity in sports. Their achievements go beyond the physical aspect of competition, influencing societal perceptions and driving positive change.

Efforts by civil society groups to use minority athletes as ambassadors for prejudice reduction campaigns are crucial in promoting inclusivity and understanding. By breaking barriers and challenging stereotypes, athletes like Alexa Moreno and Hezly Rivera contribute to reshaping perceptions and advocating for equality in sports and beyond.

In a world where racism and discrimination persist, the presence of minority athletes on global stages serves as a beacon of hope and unity. Their success not only celebrates diversity but also serves as a catalyst for discussions on race, culture, and acceptance. The impact of these athletes goes beyond the podium, resonating with communities worldwide and inspiring positive change.
