A historical opera that illuminates themes relevant to contemporary society has been revived at Bard’s SummerScape festival in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y. The opera in question is Giacomo Meyerbeer’s “Le Prophète,” a compelling production that sheds light on the dangers of demagoguery and religious fanaticism imposing a theocracy. Despite its success in Paris in 1849 and subsequent popularity, Meyerbeer’s grand operas, including “Le Prophète,” fell out of favor in the 20th and 21st centuries, making Bard’s staging a rare and significant event for opera enthusiasts.
The revival of “Le Prophète” at Bard’s Sosnoff Theater marks the first major U.S. production of the opera since the Met Opera’s performances in the late 1970s. Led by conductor Leon Botstein, the performances run for 4 1/2 hours, offering audiences an immersive experience into the world of Meyerbeer’s masterpiece. The production team, which includes musicologist Mark Everist and director Christian Räth, made efforts to restore elements of the original opera that were previously cut, enhancing the authenticity of the performance.
Set in the 16th century but resonating with contemporary relevance, “Le Prophète” tells the story of John of Leiden, an Anabaptist prophet who declares himself king of a seized city only to meet a tragic fate.
