Hollywood Breakup: Netflix Cuts Royal Ties
It’s the end of a royal Hollywood chapter.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s massive $100 million deal with Netflix will officially expire this September — and it won’t be renewed. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex inked the multiyear contract in 2020, launching a media frenzy. Now, four years later, the streaming giant is moving in a different direction.
“There’s no animosity from either side,” one insider told The Sun. “Things have just run their course.”
Although the royal pair are bowing out of the overall deal, their relationship with Netflix isn’t over just yet.
Big Launch, Mixed Results
When Harry & Meghan premiered in 2022, it was a juggernaut. The docuseries became Netflix’s most-watched documentary debut — an undeniable success. However, later projects never reached that level.
Meghan’s lifestyle series With Love, Meghan pulled 5.3 million views and landed at No. 383 in Netflix’s latest Engagement Report. That’s a steep drop compared to their debut. Meanwhile, Polo, which was executive-produced by the couple, pulled just 500,000 views and ranked a dismal No. 3,436.
Despite that, With Love, Meghan did trend briefly. One week after release, it entered Netflix’s global Top 10 with 2.6 million views and over 12 million hours watched.
Still, industry experts say the initial documentary was always going to be the high point.
The Business Shift At Netflix
This exit isn’t personal — it’s strategic.
Netflix is actively stepping away from big multi-project partnerships. The company took a similar approach with Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground, which evolved into a more flexible “first look” agreement.
As the market tightens, Netflix is clearly aiming for leaner, more adaptable content deals — not massive upfront packages.
While Meghan and Harry’s deal won’t be renewed, insiders say there’s still room for project-by-project collaborations going forward.
Season 2 Already On The Way
Meghan’s not done yet.
Season 2 of With Love, Meghan is already filmed and will hit Netflix this fall. The series, shot in Montecito, California, blends celebrity chats, lifestyle tips, and home entertaining hacks.
Chrissy Teigen will appear as the first guest of the new season. Director Michael Steed is returning as well.
And it doesn’t stop there.
‘As Ever’ Brand Lives On
Meghan’s lifestyle brand As Ever, which launched alongside her Netflix series, is also continuing. The brand partnered with Netflix’s consumer products division to feature goods directly on the show.
According to Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos, “We’re a passive partner in Meghan’s company, and it’s a big discovery model for us right now.”
Despite the end of their formal contract, Netflix is still profiting from product visibility and brand synergy with As Ever.
The brand has already had several sell-out launches, with more in the pipeline.
What The Deal Was Supposed To Be
When the couple signed with Netflix in 2020, expectations were sky-high.
Their production company promised documentaries, scripted content, feature films, docu-series, and even children’s programming. But in the end, only five projects were released — most of them non-scripted.
A big swing, and arguably a mixed result.
Yet, Meghan and Harry stood by their mission.
In a joint statement at the time, they said: “Our lives… have allowed us to understand the power of the human spirit: of courage, resilience, and the need for connection… Our focus will be on creating content that informs but also gives hope.”
That hope now lives on in other formats — just not in a sweeping Netflix package.
What Comes Next?
For now, both Meghan and Harry remain quiet on the contract’s end. Their reps, as well as Netflix, have declined official comment.
Still, a second season of With Love, Meghan, a growing lifestyle brand, and the couple’s existing media footprint all point to one thing: the Sussexes are far from finished.
This isn’t a royal breakup. It’s more of a strategic uncoupling.
And in true Hollywood fashion — the next chapter is already in production.
