Former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., has withdrawn from consideration for the role of attorney general in President-elect Donald Trump’s administration. Gaetz announced his decision on X, citing concerns that his confirmation process was becoming a distraction for the Trump transition team.
“While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction,” Gaetz wrote. He emphasized the urgency for Trump’s Department of Justice to be operational from Day 1, which he believed could not be achieved with a prolonged confirmation fight.
In a post on TruthSocial, Trump expressed admiration for Gaetz’s work during the confirmation process and described him as having a “wonderful future.” Trump’s statement reaffirmed his confidence in Gaetz, despite the controversies surrounding him.
Trump’s nomination of Gaetz reignited scrutiny over previous allegations of sex trafficking and misconduct. Although the Justice Department ultimately declined to charge Gaetz, the accusations remained a point of contention during the Senate’s preliminary discussions.
Gaetz recently resigned from his congressional seat, ending a separate House Ethics Committee investigation into the allegations. His decision not to take the oath for the next Congress was tied to his pursuit of the attorney general role, leaving uncertainty about his future in politics.
Gaetz met with senators, including Joni Ernst and John Cornyn, to address concerns about his past. Ernst confirmed that Gaetz voluntarily brought up the allegations but declined to share details. Cornyn emphasized transparency, stating, “Everything’s eventually going to come out.”
While Gaetz’s withdrawal removes him from Trump’s Cabinet consideration, his political career remains uncertain. Trump and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance have stood firmly by his side, with Trump actively lobbying for his nomination.
The controversy surrounding Gaetz highlights the challenges of navigating allegations and public scrutiny in high-stakes political appointments, leaving his next steps under intense observation.
