Matsuyama and McCarthy share lead in first PGA Tour playoff event

Hideki Matsuyama and Denny McCarthy impressed with their putting skills at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, Tennessee. Matsuyama overcame early struggles with two long birdie putts and finished with a 6-under 64, while McCarthy holed three birdie putts of 25 feet or longer on his way to a round of 63. They both stand at 11-under 129, leading the tournament by one shot ahead of Sam Burns, who shot a 63.

Scottie Scheffler finished strong with three consecutive birdies to card a 65, trailing the leaders by two shots. The FedEx St. Jude Championship is crucial for players as it quadruples points, ensuring the top 50 players advance to the BMW Championship next week and secure a place in next year’s prestigious $20 million events.

Jordan Spieth faced a tough round, posting a 75 after two double bogeys. Despite mentioning the possibility of wrist surgery in the offseason, Spieth’s performance has not been optimal this year.

Rory McIlroy struggled in the scorching heat, shooting a 73 and sitting tied for 58th place. Denny McCarthy, currently ranked 45th, aims to secure his first PGA Tour victory to move into the top five and earn a spot in the Tour Championship’s top 30.

McCarthy, who is dealing with a torn labrum, remains focused and determined to push through despite the physical challenge. Matsuyama, who had his bag stolen in London last week, retained a positive attitude and shared the lead in Memphis.

Golfers will tee off in groups of three on Saturday due to expected thunderstorms. Scheffler and Xander Schauffele attracted attention, with Scheffler finishing with a bogey-free 65 and Schauffele overcoming obstacles to shoot a 69. Scheffler’s caddie, Ted Scott, went the extra mile to ensure accurate yardages, jogging back and forth under the intense heat.

The tournament remains competitive, with players battling both the challenging course and the weather conditions to secure a coveted victory.
