VATICAN CITY — Gathered in St. Peter’s Square, thousands showed their support and prayers for Pope Francis, who is facing a severe health battle. The atmosphere was filled with solemn hope as people expressed gratitude for his leadership that has guided the Catholic Church in new directions.
The 88-year-old pope is currently battling pneumonia in both lungs and remains critically ill, despite some improvement after 11 days in the hospital. The Vatican reported Tuesday that he had a restful night’s sleep without further incidents.
As Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s second-in-command, led ceremonial prayers for nearly an hour on a chilly, rainy evening, attendees clasped their rosary beads, hoping for the pope’s recovery. Earlier that evening, the Vatican had shared an optimistic health update, offering some encouragement amid the previous days’ grim news.
Despite the slight optimism, the mood in the square leaned towards somber reflection, with many of the roughly 4,000 participants contemplating the possibility of witnessing the end of Francis’ papacy. Seated under umbrellas or gathered by the towering colonnades, worshippers reminisced about the pope’s enduring impact.
“Seeing his suffering is painful,” remarked Robert Pietro, a seminarian from Romania, who held a small, fragrant candle in honor of the pope. “But we are also thankful for all he has accomplished for the Church.”
Rev. Roberto Allison, a priest from Guadalajara, Mexico, noted that his community congregated to express gratitude for the insights gained under Francis’ guidance.
Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, taking a moment to bless individuals at the ceremony’s conclusion, noted the diverse languages spoken among the crowd as a “sign of unity” for the Catholic Church.
Pope Francis, originally from Argentina and with a history of respiratory issues, including the removal of part of one lung, has been hospitalized at Gemelli Hospital since February 14. The medical team has cited his age and frail condition as critical factors affecting his recovery. However, his situation appeared slightly more stable, with no further respiratory emergencies since the weekend, according to Monday’s physicians’ update.
Some Catholic tourists from Chicago, who had prayed daily at St. Peter’s Basilica, returned to St. Peter’s Square for the prayer vigil. They expressed a profound sense of awe at being present during what could be a historical moment in Rome.
“It’s a time we cannot predict, but it’s significant nonetheless,” Edward Burjek reflected.
Similarly, Peruvian Hatzumi Villanueva shared her thoughts, expressing her affection for previous pope St. John Paul II, while also feeling a connection to Francis, the first pope from Latin America, who resonates deeply with her.
“We hope for his speedy recovery for the sake of his ongoing mission of peace,” said Villanueva, appreciative of the pope’s compassion for migrants. Francis’ papacy has also been noted for promoting environmental protection and showing openness to LGBTQ+ rights.
Beyond the Vatican, locals, pilgrims, and even those not of the Catholic faith offered special prayers for the ailing pope.
Raniero Mancinelli, who has crafted ceremonial garments for Francis and his predecessors, voiced his sympathy.
Elisabetta Zumbo, preparing to lead a pilgrimage group, carried a substantial cross through the rain-drenched pathways to St. Peter’s Square and pledged fervent prayers for the pope. “There’s a profound feeling of sadness and emotion,” she commented.
Nearby, a family visiting from London noted that, despite not being Catholic, they felt a connection to the pope while standing amidst the grandeur of his spiritual home.
