Louisiana Governor Introduces Policy to Address Noncitizen Voting

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry recently issued an executive order mandating state agencies to include a disclaimer on voter registration forms, stating that noncitizens are not allowed to register or vote in U.S. elections. Despite no widespread evidence of noncitizen voter fraud, the governor stressed that voting is a privilege exclusive to American citizens during a press conference attended by Attorney General Liz Murrill and Secretary of State Nancy Landry, who runs the state’s elections.
Similar initiatives are being seen in other Republican-led states across the nation, reflecting a heightened focus on election integrity in the lead-up to the upcoming presidential election. Despite the rare incidence of noncitizens voting and the existing federal laws prohibiting such activity, efforts to enforce proof-of-citizenship requirements for voter registration have gained momentum, particularly among Republicans. In a recent move, Alabama officials identified over 3,200 registered voters as noncitizens and shifted their registration status to inactive, though some may be naturalized citizens eligible to vote.
In line with these developments, Tennessee election officials previously requested over 14,000 individuals to provide proof of citizenship to maintain their active-voter status, later retracting the demand. Meanwhile, Louisiana has removed 48 noncitizens from its voter rolls since 2022. Despite expressing confidence in the current election integrity measures, Secretary of State Nancy Landry emphasized the continual need for vigilance to uphold the accuracy and integrity of elections in the state.
