Long-serving New Jersey Congressman Bill Pascrell Jr. passes away at the age of 87

Democratic Representative Bill Pascrell Jr., a long-time fixture in Paterson, New Jersey, passed away at the age of 87 at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey. He had been in and out of the hospital recently due to an illness. Pascrell was known for his dedication to his constituents and was set to run for a 15th term in the upcoming election.

Pascrell was a strong advocate for emergency responders and was instrumental in creating legislation that provided grant funding to fire departments nationwide. He also played a key role in establishing the Great Falls as a national historical park, showcasing the significance of the waterfall in Paterson’s history.

Recognized for his direct approach and involvement in New Jersey’s politics, Pascrell served on the House Ways and Means Committee, focusing on tax-related legislation. Following the devastation caused by Superstorm Sandy in 2012, Pascrell passionately advocated for aid for the affected areas, demonstrating his commitment to his constituents.

Born and raised in Paterson, Pascrell had a diverse career that included serving in the Army and Army Reserve, teaching in Paterson schools, and holding various leadership positions in local government before being elected mayor and eventually to Congress. Additionally, he had a passion for baseball, having coached the Democratic team in a congressional baseball game.

Governor Phil Murphy praised Pascrell for his dedication to representing the diversity of New Jersey and for being a strong advocate for marginalized communities. Pascrell’s legacy as a dedicated public servant and champion for his constituents will be remembered by many.
