Last operational hospital in Gaza evacuating due to Israeli forces’ proximity

Recently, Gaza’s Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah has witnessed a decrease in the number of patients as Israel has mandated evacuations in nearby areas and hinted at a potential ground operation in the town, officials revealed on Monday. The hospital is a vital healthcare facility for central Gaza, and although the military hasn’t demanded its evacuation, patients and individuals seeking shelter there are apprehensive about potential engagement or Israeli incursions.
Israeli forces have previously entered several hospitals during the 10-month-long conflict, alleging that Hamas exploits them for military activities, an accusation Palestinian health officials refute. Presently, evacuation directives cover approximately 84% of Gaza’s land, displacing an estimated 90% of the population, who have been compelled to flee multiple times, carrying minimal possessions. This has led to hundreds of thousands seeking refuge in overcrowded tent camps lacking sufficient public services.
Witnessed by Associated Press journalists, people were seen evacuating the hospital vicinity on foot, some transporting patients on stretchers or carrying ailing children, along with belongings like clothing and bedding. Adding to the distress, four schools nearby are also under evacuation orders.
The hospital reported treating over 600 patients before the evacuation notices, with about 100 patients remaining, including individuals in intensive care and the pediatric ward. Despite the Israeli military emphasizing that hospitals and medical facilities weren’t included in the evacuation mandates, patients and others have fled, fearing for their safety.
The ongoing conflict began when Hamas-led militants breached the Israeli border on Oct. 7, resulting in casualties and hostages taken back to Gaza. Israel’s retaliatory actions have reportedly led to the deaths of over 40,000 Palestinians as well as extensive destruction in the region. Efforts for a lasting ceasefire and the release of hostages have been negotiated by various parties but significant challenges persist.
Throughout the conflict, hospitals have been caught in the crossfire, with diverging narratives on their use. Israel alleges that militants seek refuge in hospitals while medical personnel reject the claims and criticize the army for endangering civilians. As per international law, hospitals lose protected status if used for military purposes, though any actions against them must prioritize civilian safety.
Gaza’s health sector is profoundly strained, with only 16 of 36 hospitals partially operational, treating injuries from regular Israeli airstrikes. Importing and distributing humanitarian aid in Gaza faces obstacles, contributing to widespread hunger and disease outbreaks, amplifying pressure on healthcare services.
