Lara Trump’s resignation as co-chair of the Republican National Committee has fueled speculation that she may be a top contender to replace U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio if he steps down to join President-elect Donald Trump’s administration as secretary of state.
In a recent interview, Lara Trump expressed her openness to the possibility, stating, “I would 100% consider it.” Her departure from the RNC, where she played a pivotal role in the GOP’s recent electoral victories, is seen by many as a sign that she is positioning herself for the Senate role.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is tasked with selecting Rubio’s potential replacement. While he has yet to indicate a preference, sources suggest that several Florida Republicans, including Attorney General Ashley Moody and Chief of Staff James Uthmeier, are also being considered. However, Lara Trump’s close ties to the president-elect and her high-profile contributions at the RNC make her a strong contender.
Complicating matters, DeSantis himself is reportedly being considered by Donald Trump for a cabinet position, which could transfer the appointment responsibility to Lt. Gov. Jeanette Núñez.
Lara Trump has garnered significant support, with figures like U.S. Sen. Rick Scott and Miami-Dade County Commissioner Kevin Marino Cabrera advocating for her. Scott recently described her as a “fantastic” choice for the Senate.
DeSantis has indicated he will finalize his decision by early January. Whoever is appointed will serve until 2026, when a special election will determine the remaining two years of Rubio’s term.
As the political landscape continues to shift, Lara Trump’s potential appointment could further solidify her growing role in the Republican Party.
