Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano are set to face off for a thrilling third encounter at Madison Square Garden, revisiting the iconic venue where they first made history as the headlining act for a women’s boxing match. The much-anticipated fight, scheduled for July 11, will be available for streaming on Netflix, according to an announcement from Most Valuable Promotions.
Taylor, boasting a record of 24 wins with 1 defeat and 6 knockouts, has previously triumphed over Serrano, who holds a formidable record of 47 wins, 3 losses, 1 draw, and 31 knockouts. Their initial bout on April 30, 2022, drew a packed house of 19,187 spectators and was celebrated with fight-of-the-year accolades. Hopes for a rematch on Taylor’s home turf of Ireland were dashed, finding an alternative stage last November in Texas, at the venue for the Dallas Cowboys, where Taylor emerged victorious once again.
“This rivalry is special, and though I’m 2-0 against Amanda, each encounter in the ring is as thrilling and intense as the last,” Taylor expressed. “The first fight at Madison Square Garden was electrifying, and I’m sure this next bout will be no different.”
The upcoming match will headline the first all-women’s boxing event at Madison Square Garden, drawing fans from both Taylor’s Irish supporters and Serrano’s Puerto Rican followers. The fight will adhere to the two-minute round format standard for women’s boxing. Several years ago, Serrano, who has clinched titles in seven divisions, advocated for three-minute rounds in women’s bouts by relinquishing one of her featherweight titles. However, according to Serrano, Taylor opposed the change.
“This fight promises a record-setting payday for both of us, honoring what we owe to our fans,” Serrano stated. “Katie didn’t stick to our handshake agreement, but whenever we meet in the ring, it’s a battle. This time, on July 11, I am determined that the victory will be mine.”
Taylor reached the pinnacle of her lightweight career at Madison Square Garden in 2019, capturing the status of the undisputed champion. During their clash in New York in 2022, organizers had to expand the seating capacity from a projected 10,000 to accommodate enthusiastic fans.
Joel Fisher, the executive vice president for marquee events and operations at Madison Square Garden Entertainment, acknowledged the historic significance of their return. “Madison Square Garden has showcased some of boxing’s historic moments, from the ‘Fight of the Century,’ to Taylor and Serrano’s unforgettable 2022 matchup,” Fisher commented, making reference to the legendary clash between Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali in 1971. “We’re thrilled to host these celebrated athletes again for an all-female boxing card, marking another historic occasion.”
