Kansas State’s No. 17 defense shines in 34-27 victory over Tulane

Kansas State safety Jack Fabris scored a crucial touchdown in the fourth quarter by returning a fumble for 60 yards to help the 17th-ranked Wildcats secure a 34-27 victory over Tulane. Tulane had a potential tying touchdown nullified due to offensive pass interference, and VJ Payne’s interception in the end zone further solidified the win for Kansas State. Avery Johnson threw two touchdown passes for Kansas State, and DJ Giddens rushed for over 100 yards for the sixth consecutive game.

Tulane, despite leading for much of the game, faltered when quarterback Darian Mensah committed turnovers, including a pivotal strip-sack that led to Fabris’ touchdown. Mensah, in his first season as a starter, threw for 342 yards and two touchdowns to tight end Alex Bauman. Mario Williams and Makhi Hughes performed well for Tulane, but critical errors and missed opportunities cost them the game.

Kansas State’s strong second-half performance on both offense and defense allowed them to defeat Tulane for the first time in three meetings. Tulane showed promise under new coach Jon Sumrall and a new starting quarterback, hinting at potential success in the American Athletic Conference. However, the game served as a missed opportunity for Tulane to enhance their College Football Playoff chances.

In their upcoming games, Kansas State will host Arizona, a new Big 12 member, while Tulane faces a tough challenge against No. 15 Oklahoma. These matchups will test both teams in their respective conferences.
