Justin Herbert, Chargers quarterback, to be sidelined for at least 2 weeks due to right foot injury

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert will sit out for at least two weeks due to a plantar fascia injury in his right foot. The injury was detected after a practice session on Wednesday. Herbert is expected to be back in time for the regular-season opener on September 8 against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Coach Jim Harbaugh mentioned that it is uncertain when the injury occurred but mentioned Herbert is still participating in meetings and some conditioning work. Herbert will wear a walking boot for two weeks, followed by a gradual return-to-play plan as outlined by the Chargers.

This is the first major injury during Harbaugh’s inaugural training camp as the Chargers’ coach. Harbaugh has been cautious in increasing the practice intensity to prevent injuries like this one. Herbert has faced several injuries in the past two seasons, including bruised ribs, a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder, and two broken fingers.

Despite the setback, Herbert had been commended by Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman for his quick grasp of the team’s offensive schemes during offseason activities and training camp. Easton Stick, who started four games last season, will take most of the first-team snaps in Herbert’s absence. The Chargers also have Max Duggan and undrafted rookie Casey Bauman on the roster as backup options.

Harbaugh praised Stick for his unwavering dedication and work ethic, stating that Stick’s approach to the game is exceptional. The team will continue its preparations for the upcoming season without Herbert in full throttle.
