Jordan Chiles, American gymnast, ordered to return bronze medal due to score revision by court, IOC confirms

American gymnast Jordan Chiles will have to surrender the bronze medal she earned in the Paris Olympics floor exercise as her score was judged incorrectly, confirmed the International Olympic Committee on Sunday. The bronze medal will now be reallocated to Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu, following a decision from the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Less than a day after the Court of Arbitration for Sport dismissed a scoring appeal by Team USA coach Cecile Landi, which had initially placed Chiles on the podium, the decision was made to revert the finishing order. CAS determined that the appeal made by Landi for adding 0.1 to Chiles’ score exceeded the permitted 1-minute time window set by the FIG, prompting the reallocation of the medal.
The IOC announced it would coordinate with the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee for the return of Chiles’ bronze medal and collaborate with the Romanian Olympic Committee for a ceremony honoring Barbosu. The revised ranking places Barbosu in third place, followed by Romanian Sabrina Maneca-Voinea in fourth, and Chiles in fifth, behind gold medalist Rebeca Andrade of Brazil and silver medalist Simone Biles of the U.S.
While it was the IOC’s decision to reallocate the medal, the FIG stated that the final ranking was to be determined in accordance with CAS’s decision. The FIG now holds the responsibility of awarding the medal, with Chiles set to surrender her bronze as per the IOC’s confirmation.
