Biden broke new ground as the first U.S. president to convene a quadripartite summit of the leaders from Australia, India, and Japan in 2021, a tradition that has continued annually since then. This initiative showcases a shift in American foreign policy towards the Indo-Pacific region as a strategic move to counter China’s influence.
This occasion will be the inaugural instance during Biden’s presidency where he hosts international dignitaries in his Delaware hometown, as he has notably increased his time there following his decision not to seek reelection in July. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre emphasized that Biden’s choice to host Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of Australia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan in Wilmington underscores the president’s personal connections with the Quad leaders and the Quad’s significance to all their nations.
Jean-Pierre highlighted that the Quad Leaders Summit’s central themes will include strengthening strategic alignment among the participating countries, advancing their collective vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific region, and delivering tangible benefits for Indo-Pacific partners in critical areas.
