Belgian actor Jean-Claude Van Damme, renowned for his roles in action films like Kickboxer and Street Fighter, faces serious allegations in Romania. The Romanian Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) has filed a criminal complaint against the 64-year-old actor. They accuse him of engaging in sexual activities with five Romanian women who were victims of human trafficking. These incidents allegedly occurred during an event in Cannes, France.
Alleged Involvement with Criminal Network Led by Morel Bolea
Van Damme met these women through individuals under investigation for sex trafficking. This includes Romanian businessman and modeling agency owner Morel Bolea. Bolea allegedly leads a criminal group trafficking women under the guise of modeling opportunities. The traffickers presented the women to Van Damme as a “gift.” Van Damme knew about their exploited status.
Legal Proceedings and International Jurisdiction Challenges
Given that the alleged activities took place in France, the French High Court of Cassation must authorize the initiation of criminal proceedings. If approved, authorities will summon suspects, including Van Damme, to Romania for questioning. Romanian authorities launched this case as part of a broader investigation into human and minor trafficking in 2020.
Previous Allegations and Personal History
This is not the first time Van Damme has faced such accusations. In April 2022, a 33-year-old woman filed a complaint alleging that Van Damme assaulted her in a Brussels champagne bar. The Brussels public prosecutor’s office confirmed an ongoing investigation into the incident.
Van Damme has also publicly acknowledged personal struggles. These include a past cocaine addiction during the 1990s. He reportedly spent up to $10,000 a week on the drug. Additionally, in 2012, Van Damme admitted to having an affair with Australian singer Kylie Minogue during the filming of Street Fighter in 1994. He described the experience as a “beautiful lovemaking” and praised Minogue’s charm and beauty.
