It might be worth the 18 year wait: A Devil Wears Prada sequel is in the works

Following years of uncertainty, contradictory statements from the main actors, and a heartwarming reunion at the recent SAG Awards, fans of the beloved movie The Devil Wears Prada can rejoice as a sequel is officially in development, as reported by Vogue, nearly two decades after the first film’s debut.

The path to this revelation has been filled with ups and downs. Back in October 2022, Anne Hathaway adamantly denied to Entertainment Tonight the possibility of a sequel, stating, “there’s not going to be a sequel. It’s not gonna happen. We can’t do it.” However, more recently in April 2024, she slightly softened her stance during an interview with V Magazine, hinting that a sequel was not entirely out of the question. She mentioned the changes in technology and the challenge of adapting the story for the modern era. Nonetheless, she expressed openness to the idea of reuniting with the cast and crew for a new project.

Despite the uncertainties, it seems like the original cast, or most of them, are gearing up for a sequel. Variety reports that Disney is in the early stages of creating a follow-up film, with Aline Brosh McKenna, the original screenwriter, in discussions to pen the new storyline. The sequel is rumored to focus on Miranda Priestly navigating the changing landscape of the publishing industry and facing off against Emily Charlton, now a powerful executive. Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt are reportedly on board for the sequel, with Wendy Finerman returning as the producer. There is also hope for David Frankel to direct again and for Stanley Tucci to reprise his role as Nigel, as he has shown interest in returning.

All eyes are now on Hathaway and her character, Andrea Sachs. The burning question remains: will Andrea still be the same ambitious young woman chasing her dreams, or will she have found success in a different field? One thing is for sure: she won’t be with Nate, as confirmed by Brosh McKenna in a 2023 interview with Variety. The anticipation for the sequel is certainly building up, and fans can’t wait to see where the next chapter takes these iconic characters.
