U.S. officials say the Biden administration believes it has won assurances from Israel that it will not strike Iranian nuclear or oil sites as it looks to strike back following Iran’s missile barrage earlier this month. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private diplomatic discussions, cautioned that the pledge is not iron-clad and that circumstances could change. The United States is investigating the unauthorized release of classified documents detailing Israel’s military plans to attack Iran, according to three U.S. officials who spoke with The Associated Press. A fourth official confirmed that the documents appear to be legitimate.
The leaked documents, attributed to the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency, reveal that Israel was actively moving military assets in preparation for a strike following Iran’s ballistic missile attack on Oct. 1. These classified materials, marked “top secret,” were meant to be shared only within the “Five Eyes” intelligence alliance, which includes the U.S., Great Britain, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia.
The classified documents first appeared on the Telegram messaging app and were reported by CNN and Axios. The U.S. investigation is focused on determining how the documents were leaked — whether through an intentional act by someone within the intelligence community or via a cyberattack. Officials are also working to assess if any additional sensitive information was compromised.
The U.S. has advised Israel to capitalize on its elimination of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and push for a cease-fire in Gaza. The U.S. has also cautioned against expanding military operations in Lebanon, which could provoke a broader regional conflict. However, Israeli leaders have emphasized their resolve to respond to Iran’s missile attack.
The style of the leaked documents resembles those previously leaked by Jack Teixeira, an Air National Guardsman who pled guilty earlier this year to leaking classified U.S. military intelligence. These documents, reportedly sourced from satellite image analysis, were posted on a Telegram channel believed to be based in Tehran, Iran’s capital. The channel has previously shared content supportive of Iran’s “Axis of Resistance.”
The Pentagon has acknowledged the reports of the leaked documents but has refrained from further comment. The Israeli military has yet to respond to requests regarding the breach. As the U.S. investigation continues, concerns grow over the potential implications for U.S.-Israel relations and the broader Middle Eastern geopolitical landscape.
