Having spent most of her life in California—aside from her middle and high school years in Quebec and college at Howard University in D.C.—Harris has deep roots in the Golden State. Born in Oakland, raised in Berkeley, and educated at UC Hastings College of the Law, her career path took her from the district attorney’s office in San Francisco to the attorney general’s office in California, and finally to the U.S. Senate in 2017. It’s no surprise, then, that her real estate holdings are predominantly in California, with additional properties in Washington, D.C. The Vice President’s residence at Number One Observatory Circle is a historic home on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Observatory. Originally built in the late 19th century, this Queen Anne-style house was repurposed as the official residence for the vice president in 1974. Spanning 9,150 square feet across three stories and set on 12 acres, the residence has hosted numerous dignitaries and features personal touches from previous vice presidents, including a swimming pool added by Dan Quayle and an underground bunker built by Dick Cheney after 9/11.

Brentwood, Los Angeles

In 2012, Kamala Harris’s husband, Douglas Emhoff, purchased a 3,500-square-foot home in the upscale Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, known for its celebrity residents. The couple married in 2014, and the home was soon transferred into a joint trust. This property, which boasts four bedrooms and a pool, is situated just ten minutes from the Getty Center. Although it was briefly evacuated due to the Getty Fire in 2022, the house sustained no damage. Today, it is valued at approximately $5 million.

Washington D.C.

When Kamala Harris was elected to the Senate in 2017, she bought a two-bedroom, 1,700-square-foot condo in the Westlight complex in Washington D.C. for $1.775 million. Located in the West End neighborhood, this LEED-certified building is close to Georgetown and Dupont Circle, with amenities including a rooftop pool, fitness center, and 24-hour concierge.

San Francisco, California

In 2004, Harris purchased a condo in San Francisco for $489,000 when she became the city’s first Black attorney general. The 1,000-square-foot loft in the SoMa neighborhood has nearly doubled in value since then. SoMa is known for its proximity to SF MoMA and major tech company headquarters like Uber and Salesforce.
