How Kamala Harris Balances Role as Vice President and Change Advocate

In Washington, Kamala Harris, the current Vice President who has been in office for 3 1/2 years, is also the Democratic presidential candidate who is promoting a “new way forward.” Harris skillfully combines taking credit for parts of President Joe Biden’s record while positioning herself as a fresh leader who criticizes “the politics of the past.” This double-sided approach, although frustrating to former President Donald Trump and his supporters, is being noted as a unique advantage in the political landscape by various experts and political figures.

Harris’ strategy involves emphasizing Biden’s plans while also portraying herself as a candidate for change. As the first female Vice President and a person of Black and South Asian descent, she presents herself as a departure from the traditional political mold. Despite closely aligning with Biden’s policies, Harris focuses on her identity and background, which resonate with many voters seeking a new direction.

The Trump campaign has criticized Harris for lacking detailed policy positions and attempted to label her as more liberal than she portrays. Nevertheless, Harris’s campaign has been successful in fundraising, with an announcement that they raised $82 million during the Democratic National Convention week and a total of $540 million since Biden withdrew from the race to endorse her in July.

One significant point of contention revolves around foreign policy, with Harris claiming credit for meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy prior to Russia’s invasion, a move that has been questioned by opponents. Meanwhile, President Trump continues to highlight aspects of the Biden administration record that are less favorable, including events like the Kabul airport bombing in Afghanistan.

As the election cycle progresses, Harris is aiming to distinguish herself from the politics of the past while embracing the positive aspects of the current administration. By appealing to a desire for a more hopeful and forward-thinking political landscape, Harris’s campaign seeks to capture the attention and support of voters looking for change and innovation in leadership.
