Hostages free at last? Hamas and Israel agree to ceasefire

A breakthrough agreement has been reached between Israel and Hamas, including a temporary ceasefire and a phased release of hostages and Palestinian prisoners, according to a source close to the negotiations.

Under the deal, Hamas and allied groups will release 33 hostages captured in October 2023, while Israel will free hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. The deal also aims to bring much-needed humanitarian aid to Gaza, marking only the second pause in conflict since Israeli bombardments began.

If confirmed, this agreement could allow Palestinian civilians to return to northern Gaza, providing a brief reprieve from the ongoing crisis.

Former President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to react to the news of a ceasefire and hostage deal between Israel and Hamas. “WE HAVE A DEAL FOR THE HOSTAGES IN THE MIDDLE EAST. THEY WILL BE RELEASED SHORTLY. THANK YOU!” he posted.

Trump claimed the agreement was only possible because of his “Historic Victory in November,” stating it sent a clear message of strength. He highlighted the role of his Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, and pledged continued efforts to secure peace and prevent Gaza from becoming a “terrorist safe haven.”

He also emphasized expanding the Abraham Accords, saying this deal would build momentum for further peace in the region.

American Hostages Presumed Alive

Three American hostages, Edan Alexander, Sagui Dekel-Chen, and Keith Siegel, are presumed to be alive and held by Hamas. However, it’s unlikely all three will be freed in the initial phase of the hostage deal, given Alexander’s status as an IDF soldier.

Alexander, 21, was stationed near Gaza during the October 7 attacks. Dekel-Chen, 36, is a husband and father of three. Siegel, in his 60s, was taken alongside his wife, Aviva, who was released in November 2023.

Four other Americans, confirmed dead, remain in Gaza: Itay Chen, Omer Neutra, Gadi Haggai, and Judih Weinstein Haggai. All seven are dual citizens.
