Harlem Week celebrates five decades of transformation from despair to revival in NYC neighborhood

In the 1970s, Harlem faced disinvestment, leading to an exodus of nearly 50,000 residents off the neighborhood. LeeSandra Moore, a Harlem native, recalls the difficult times when her own mother decided to move to Virginia. However, efforts to revitalize Harlem began in 1974 with Percy Sutton’s launch of Harlem Week, aiming to showcase the neighborhood’s rich history and culture and attract back former residents.
Harlem Week celebrated its 50th anniversary this year, featuring 18 days of free events highlighting Harlem’s heritage and resilience, according to the Rev. Al Sharpton. The occasion marked a significant transformation for the historic Black community, which had endured years of violence and neglect.
Back in the 1970s, Harlem suffered from negative portrayals in the media, further deepening its struggles. Sutton’s initiative brought together influential figures like James Baldwin and Maya Angelou, inaugurating Harlem Day in 1974. The event marked a turning point in recognizing Harlem’s significance by renaming streets and promoting cultural awareness.
The recent Harlem Week celebration incorporated diverse activities, including empowerment workshops, health initiatives, and entertainment such as Broadway performances. The event aimed not only to celebrate but also to address long-standing health disparities within the community, offering activities like blood pressure checks and health summits.
Prominent figures like Cynthia Bailey and Malik Yoba participated in this year’s Harlem Week, sharing personal stories and advocating for health awareness and social justice. The event sought to inspire residents to prioritize their well-being and take control of their health outcomes, reflecting a community-driven approach to address local challenges.
Despite ongoing concerns like rising gentrification and health issues, Harlem Week has played a vital role in revitalizing the neighborhood, evident in restored buildings, new businesses, and a vibrant cultural scene. While changes have brought both progress and challenges, Harlem residents continue to cherish their community’s rich history and enduring spirit.
