Germany and France have issued stern warnings to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump after he refused to rule out the use of military force to seize Greenland, Denmark’s autonomous Arctic territory.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned Trump’s remarks, stating, “The principle of the inviolability of borders applies to every country… no matter whether it’s a very small one or a very powerful one.” He expressed “certain incomprehension” about the incoming U.S. administration’s comments and underscored the importance of NATO as a cornerstone of defense and transatlantic relations.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot echoed Scholz’s concerns, declaring, “There is obviously no question that the European Union would let other nations of the world attack its sovereign borders.” He emphasized the need for Europe to “wake up and build up its strength” in response to an era that seems to favor the survival of the fittest.
During a news conference at Mar-a-Lago, Trump defended his stance, calling Greenland “critical” for national and economic security. He highlighted the island’s strategic location and resources, stating, “We need them for economic security.” Trump argued that Greenland is vital for tracking Russian and Chinese naval movements and protecting the free world.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reaffirmed that “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders” and that its future lies in the hands of its local population. Frederiksen, while underscoring Denmark’s commitment to cooperation with the U.S., expressed concern over Trump’s remarks.
Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede also dismissed the idea of a sale, reiterating the island’s sovereignty. Greenland MP Kuno Fencker emphasized that while the island seeks independence in the future, decisions about its governance must be made by its people.
Greenland’s abundant rare earth minerals, critical for producing high-tech devices, add to its geopolitical allure. Trump has repeatedly pointed to these resources as a justification for U.S. interest in the island.
Despite Greenland’s aspirations for greater autonomy, its reliance on Danish subsidies and public services makes full independence a challenge.
Danish Broadcasting Corporation correspondent Steffen Kretz reported that Greenlanders were “shocked” by Trump’s statements. While many support eventual independence, there is widespread opposition to becoming a U.S. territory. Greenlanders value their sovereignty and prefer partnerships that respect their autonomy.
Trump’s rhetoric has sparked what some analysts describe as the most significant international crisis for Denmark in modern history. While Denmark’s government is attempting to downplay tensions, behind-the-scenes concerns are mounting over the implications of Trump’s statements.
Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., added to the controversy with a visit to Greenland, where he posted photos of himself with Greenlanders wearing pro-Trump caps. His visit was described as a “personal day trip,” but it has further fueled the diplomatic uproar.
This situation highlights the geopolitical importance of the Arctic and sets the stage for potential diplomatic clashes as Trump prepares to take office.
