Gavin Newsom Sues Donald Trump Over Unlawful Tariffs

California Governor Gavin Newsom is taking legal action against President Donald Trump. On Wednesday, he announced a lawsuit that challenges Trump’s sweeping tariffs on imports. Newsom says these tariffs are unlawful and harmful to California’s economy. Gavin Newsom Sues because they are raising prices, threatening jobs, and hurting working families. In his statement, Newsom said California will fight for American families who can’t afford this kind of chaos.

California Claims Trump’s Tariffs Need Congress Approval

The lawsuit argues that Trump used the International Emergency Economic Powers Act in the wrong way. Trump applied the law to place a 10% tariff on most foreign imports. He also added higher tariffs on goods from Mexico, Canada, and China. But Gavin Newsom Sues citing that using that emergency law for tariffs is illegal without Congress’s approval. California is the first state to file a lawsuit over these specific tariffs. The governor believes his state has a strong case and hopes it will lead to change.

Billions of Dollars Could Be Lost if Tariffs Continue

California has the largest economy in the United States. It ranks as the fifth-biggest economy in the entire world. Because of that, Newsom says the state has a lot to lose. Tariffs can increase the cost of imported goods, which raises prices for businesses and families. Farmers, manufacturers, and small companies are all at risk. According to Newsom, billions of dollars in state revenue could be lost. That’s why Gavin Newsom Sues and believes this legal fight is necessary.

Trump Pauses Tariffs for Most Countries, But Not China

Recently, Trump announced a 90-day pause on most of his tariff plans. He said he made that decision after dozens of countries came forward asking for deals. However, China was not included in that pause. Instead, Trump raised tariffs on Chinese goods even more. He added a 125% duty on Chinese imports. He blamed China for showing what he called a “lack of respect.” On top of that, a 20% “fentanyl tariff” remains in place. This brings the total tariff on some Chinese products to a massive 145%.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta Supports the Lawsuit

California Attorney General Rob Bonta is backing the lawsuit. He said Trump’s use of tariffs was not only reckless but also unlawful. Bonta explained that farmers in the Central Valley are already feeling the pressure. Small businesses in places like Sacramento are worried. Families are paying more for basic goods. He warned that the president’s choices have real consequences. Bonta and Gavin Newsom Sues to show they both agree that California must take action before more damage is done.

Newsom Seeks Exemptions From Other Countries

While the lawsuit moves forward, Newsom is also working behind the scenes. He has asked several countries to leave California exports out of their own tariff responses. These are known as retaliatory tariffs. Countries often use them to hit back after the U.S. imposes taxes on imports. Newsom hopes that international partners will spare California businesses. So far, no exemptions have been confirmed. But the governor says talks are ongoing.

Lawsuit Sends a Strong Message to Washington

This lawsuit is more than just a local issue. Newsom wants to send a message to Washington and the rest of the country. He believes no president should have this much power over trade policy without Congress. The governor also hopes this case will encourage other states to step forward. If the lawsuit is successful, it could change how trade laws are enforced in the future.
