Former supervisor says injured Ferguson police officer aimed to bring change ‘from within’

A Black police officer, Travis Brown, remains in critical condition after being injured during a protest in Ferguson commemorating the death of Michael Brown ten years ago. Officer Brown, not related to Michael Brown, joined the Ferguson police force earlier this year, aiming to make a difference from within the department, inspired by his father, also a police officer. The 36-year-old father of two sustained a severe brain injury after being attacked during what started as a peaceful demonstration that turned violent.

The assailant, identified as 28-year-old Elijah Gantt, allegedly tackled Officer Brown, causing him to fall and hit his head. The attack also resulted in injuries to two other officers who tried to apprehend Gantt. The protester faces charges of assault, resisting arrest, and property damage and remains in custody on a $500,000 cash-only bond.

Travis Brown’s strong sense of service and commitment to his community led him to join law enforcement, despite negative encounters with police in his youth. His former supervisor, Lt. Ray Rice, praised Brown’s dedication to making a positive impact as a police officer, emphasizing the importance of having officers like him in every department. Brown was described as someone who actively engaged with the public, including volunteering to read to children at elementary schools.

Ferguson has seen significant changes in its police force since the death of Michael Brown, with a higher representation of Black officers and increased focus on training in crisis intervention and bias avoidance. Despite these improvements, the recent attack on Officer Brown has sparked outrage in the community, prompting calls for justice and prayers for his recovery. Police Chief Troy Doyle expressed frustration over the incident, questioning the motives behind the violence and emphasizing the need for unity and respect within Ferguson.

As Officer Brown continues his fight for recovery, the community stands in solidarity, condemning the senseless attack and highlighting the ongoing importance of promoting accountability and understanding in law enforcement.
