Ex-NFL QB Jay Cutler faces DUI and handgun possession charges following a car crash.

FRANKLIN, Tenn. — Former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler has been taken into custody and faces charges related to driving under the influence and for possessing a handgun following a minor car accident on Thursday.

The 41-year-old Cutler posted a $5,000 bond and was subsequently released, as per a statement issued by the Franklin Police Department.

Authorities arrived at the scene of the incident to find that Cutler’s vehicle had rear-ended another automobile. Upon their arrival, officers noted the distinct smell of alcohol emanating from Cutler. His bloodshot eyes and slurred speech further raised suspicions, according to the police report.

When requested to undergo a field sobriety assessment, Cutler declined. Consequently, he was transported to a local hospital where a blood sample was taken under the authority of a search warrant.

In addition to the DUI charges, law enforcement discovered two firearms within Cutler’s vehicle, one of which was loaded. He is also facing charges for failing to exercise proper care to prevent the collision and for breaching implied consent laws. Every charge leveled against him is categorized as a misdemeanor or a civil foul under Tennessee regulations.

Over his 12-season tenure in the NFL, Cutler amassed a total of 35,133 passing yards and 227 touchdowns while playing for teams including the Denver Broncos, Chicago Bears, and Miami Dolphins. He stepped away from professional football following the conclusion of the 2017 season with Miami.

Cutler was once married to reality television personality Kristin Cavallari, but the couple finalized their divorce in 2020.
