‘Drill, baby, drill’: Trump names fracking advocate Chris Wright as Energy Secretary in push for U.S. energy dominance

President-elect Donald Trump announced Saturday his choice of Chris Wright, a staunch advocate for fracking and CEO of Liberty Energy, to head the Department of Energy in his incoming administration. Wright is best known for his pivotal role in the American Shale Revolution, which significantly boosted U.S. oil and natural gas production in the mid-2000s.

“As Secretary of Energy, Chris will be a key leader, driving innovation, cutting red tape, and ushering in a new ‘Golden Age of American Prosperity and Global Peace,’” Trump declared in a statement.

A Fossil Fuel Champion in the Cabinet

Wright’s appointment signals Trump’s commitment to prioritizing fossil fuel production while rolling back regulations designed to promote green energy. Known for his “Drill, Baby, Drill” mantra, Trump aims to reverse climate-focused policies, focusing instead on expanding the U.S. energy sector.

The Liberty Energy executive has faced backlash for denying the existence of a climate crisis. In a controversial LinkedIn video, Wright stated, “There is no climate crisis, and we are not in the midst of an energy transition either.” He previously garnered attention in 2019 for drinking fracking fluid on camera to demonstrate its purported safety.

A Sharp Departure from Renewable Energy Goals

Wright’s appointment marks a dramatic shift from the approach of his predecessor, Jennifer Granholm, who championed clean and renewable energy under the Biden administration. Trump’s administration, by contrast, emphasizes fossil fuel dominance as a cornerstone of its energy strategy.

Additionally, Wright will serve on the newly created Council of National Energy. Trump has tasked the council with overseeing all aspects of U.S. energy production and distribution, aiming to achieve “U.S. ENERGY DOMINANCE.” North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum has been named head of the council and is also slated to lead the Department of the Interior.

A Mission for Energy Dominance

Trump outlined the council’s mission, which includes slashing regulations, enhancing private sector investments, and prioritizing innovation. “This team will drive U.S. Energy Dominance, which will drive down inflation, win the A.I. arms race with China, and expand American Diplomatic Power to end wars across the world,” Trump said.

As Wright steps into this high-profile role, his appointment underscores a significant pivot in U.S. energy policy, with a renewed focus on fossil fuels and a departure from renewable energy initiatives.
