Disney Announces New Theme Park in Abu Dhabi

  • Disney announces opening its seventh theme park in Abu Dhabi, first in the Middle East, located on Yas Island.

  • Miral will fund the park’s construction, with Disney overseeing the creative design and operations.

  • The park will offer unique themed accommodations, dining, and experiences blending Disney’s storytelling with Abu Dhabi’s culture.

Disney is expanding with a new theme park in Abu Dhabi. This will be the company’s seventh park and its first in the Middle East. The announcement came on Wednesday, exciting fans and investors alike. The new park will be located on Yas Island in the United Arab Emirates. This island is already a famous destination for tourists, with attractions like Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi. The Yas Marina Circuit, known for its Formula 1 races, is also nearby, adding to the area’s appeal.

Miral Takes Charge of Construction

Miral will handle all costs related to the development and construction of the park. Disney will play a major role in designing the park but won’t directly invest any capital. Disney’s renowned Imagineering team will oversee the creative side, ensuring the park captures the magic Disney is known for. Miral will also manage the park once it’s completed. However, Disney will maintain operational oversight when the park opens. While Disney won’t invest in the park directly, it will benefit from royalties.

Bob Iger Speaks About the New Venture

Disney CEO Bob Iger shared his excitement about the new park in a statement. He emphasized the cultural connection between Disney and Abu Dhabi. Iger described the new park as a way to blend modern architecture with innovative technology. He highlighted that the park will offer immersive experiences like never before. According to Iger, Abu Dhabi’s culture, with its focus on arts and creativity, makes it a great fit for Disney. He expressed his belief that the park will be a spectacular addition to the Disney family.

Timeline for Development

Iger also discussed the timeline for the new park. He revealed that Disney is already in the creative planning stage. However, he did not commit to a specific opening date. Iger explained that it usually takes between 18 months and two years to fully design a park. After that, building the park typically takes about five years. While there is no set date yet, the development is clearly underway.

A Strategic Move for Disney

The new theme park fits into Disney’s broader strategy to grow its experiences division. This includes not only theme parks but also resorts, cruises, and consumer products. In its recent earnings report, Disney saw a 6% increase in revenue from its experiences division compared to the previous year. This growth shows how important the division is for Disney’s overall success. Disney’s stock surged by over 9% following the announcement of the new park. This reflects investor confidence in the company’s strategy and future growth.

Disney Expands in the UAE

Disney has been steadily growing its presence in the United Arab Emirates. The company has expanded its retail presence and staged major events like “Disney on Ice” and the Broadway production of “The Lion King.” This new theme park will continue Disney’s expansion into the UAE market. With its established brand and successful shows in the region, the company is building on its success. The park will be another major step in deepening its connection with Middle Eastern audiences.

Ideal Location for Global Reach

Iger explained that Abu Dhabi is an ideal location for the new park. About one-third of the world’s population lives within a four-hour flight from the UAE. This makes the area a prime spot for attracting visitors from all over the world. Disney sees this as a massive opportunity. It puts them in a prime position to reach an audience of approximately 500 million potential visitors. The park will not only serve the UAE but also draw tourists from nearby countries and continents.

A New Era for Theme Parks

Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Experiences, described the new resort as a “new frontier” in theme park development. He explained that the park would be the most advanced and interactive destination in it’s portfolio. This makes it stand out from other Disney parks. The park will feature a beautiful waterfront, offering guests a relaxing yet exciting experience. D’Amaro emphasized that this project would allow Disney to reach a whole new part of the world, welcoming even more families to experience magic.

Unique Experiences Await Visitors

The new park will offer much more than just rides. Disney plans to introduce unique themed accommodations, dining, and shopping experiences. These will blend iconic storytelling with the cultural and futuristic elements of Abu Dhabi. Visitors will be able to enjoy world-class experiences that combine the best of both worlds. D’Amaro hinted that the park would be much larger than any Disney park currently in operation. This means that guests can expect an even more extensive range of attractions and activities.

Looking Ahead to the Future

The opening of this new theme park represents a bold step for Disney. It expands their global reach and brings it’s magic to a new part of the world. With its innovative design, cultural richness, and immersive experiences, the park is set to become a major attraction. Fans of Disney, both new and old, will soon be able to enjoy a brand-new destination that offers something truly unique. As the project progresses, plans for Abu Dhabi will likely have a big impact on the global theme park industry.
