Dewi Weber steps in for Portland Classic after Dutch Olympic committee rejection

Dewi Weber, who was denied a spot in the Olympics by the Dutch Olympic committee, showcased an outstanding performance by shooting a 10-under 62 to take the lead in the Portland Classic’s second round. Despite not meeting the Netherlands’ specific standards for Olympic participation, Weber, who qualified under International Golf Federation criteria, displayed a remarkable game.

Weber, expressing disappointment over missing out on the Olympics, remained focused on proving herself in the Portland Classic. With a two-shot lead over first-round leader Polly Mack and past champion Andrea Lee, Weber’s stellar performance included nine birdies in an 11-hole stretch during her round at Columbia Edgewater.

Playing in only her second LPGA Tour event this year, the former Miami player exhibited confidence and composure, emphasizing her shot-by-shot approach. Weber’s exceptional gameplay, which included seven consecutive birdies in both the first and second rounds, positioned her at 16 under overall after 36 holes.

Polly Mack, who followed her opening 63 with a 67, trailed Weber along with Andrea Lee, who shot a 63 in the morning round. The absence of top-ranked players in the field, due to the upcoming Olympics, provided an opportunity for the competitors at the Portland Classic to shine, with Indian Olympian Aditi Ashok also participating in the event. Defending champion Chanettee Wannasaen showcased a solid performance, further adding excitement to the tournament.
