Democrats were impressed by Harris’ confrontational approach towards Trump during the debate, in contrast to Biden.

In the eyes of many Democrats, Kamala Harris showcased qualities that Joe Biden lacked during the debates against Donald Trump: assertiveness, agility, and a relentless approach in challenging her opponent. Following Biden’s lackluster debate performance in June, Democrats across various locations, from bars to watch parties, were pleased with Harris’ vigorous efforts to unsettle the Republican candidate. Amid a tightly contested race for the presidency, Democrats emerged more enthusiastic after the nationally televised debate.
Alina Taylor, a high school special education teacher, described Harris as having “prosecuted Donald Trump” during the debate, while criticizing Trump’s performance as laughable and nonsensical. In Seattle, viewers at Massive, a queer nightclub, cheered as Harris confronted Trump, with the crowd showing disdain for Trump’s false statements and enjoying moments of levity during the event.
However, not all viewers were swayed by Harris’ performance. Sarah Frances Morris, attending a watch party in Brentwood, Tennessee, remained steadfast in her support for Trump, praising his stance on border issues and his ability to communicate his plans effectively. She felt that Harris failed to provide sufficient details about her proposed policies despite mentioning them.
Supporters of Harris, like UC Berkeley student Dushant Puri, commended Harris for her assertiveness from the outset of the debate. Additionally, voters appreciated Harris’ clarity and preparedness compared to Biden’s previous debate performance. Moments like Trump’s unfounded remarks about immigrants eating pets left an impression on viewers, with Harris responding incredulously.
Although the debate did not necessarily clarify Harris’ presidential plans or secure support from independents or wavering Republicans, it raised the spirits of many Democrats disheartened by Biden’s earlier debate struggles. Observers like Annetta Clark and Natasha Salas commended Harris for her performance and her attempts to address the country’s political divisiveness.
Even outside the United States, there was interest in the debate. At a migrant shelter in Tijuana, Mexico, asylum-seeker Rakan al Muhana expressed frustration with Trump’s views on the Middle East conflict, highlighting the impact of policies on individuals fleeing violence. Al Muhana’s personal tragedy underscored the global implications of the U.S. presidential debates.
