Democratic convention wraps up on Thursday with Kamala Harris as the party’s nominee

Vice President Kamala Harris will deliver a speech on the final night of the Democratic National Convention, accepting her party’s historic presidential nomination. The event marks a crucial moment for Harris to connect with millions of viewers. Harris will use her speech to share her personal journey from a middle-class upbringing to her role as a prosecutor, contrast her positive vision with President Donald Trump’s agenda, and evoke a sense of patriotism.

Harris previously appeared at the convention on Monday to express gratitude towards President Joe Biden and on Tuesday, as part of a virtual rally in Milwaukee. Before Harris, other notable speakers at the convention will include Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, civil rights leader Al Sharpton, and Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers. The singer Pink is also scheduled to perform.

Harris will make history as the first Black woman and the first person of South Asian descent to accept a major party’s presidential nomination. She follows Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, her running mate choice, who endeared himself to Democratic supporters with his personal story as a football coach, National Guard member, and experiences with fertility struggles. Walz aimed to introduce himself to a wider audience and balance Harris’ coastal background with his Midwestern roots.

Walz’s emotional speech resonated with many, including his 17-year-old son, Gus, who tearfully watched from the front row of the convention hall. The moment captured a poignant display of pride and support. The speeches are a part of the Democratic strategy to rally their base and attract undecided voters ahead of the upcoming election.
