Crucial police testimony concludes initial week of trial for former politician charged in Las Vegas journalist’s murder

In Las Vegas, the murder trial of former politician Robert Telles continued with the testimony of detective Derek Jappe, who was involved in the case. Telles is accused of killing investigative reporter Jeff German. Telles’ defense team has been emphasizing the detective’s involvement in the investigation, claiming he tried to steer the case against Telles. Jappe, known for investigating corruption cases, stated that he was brought in to assist in Telles’ arrest due to his crisis negotiation training and prior interactions with Telles regarding financial crime allegations.

Telles, a former public administrator, denies the murder charges, alleging he was framed and criticizing the police’s handling of the investigation. The killing of German, a respected journalist, shocked the community and the journalism world. German’s critical articles about Telles and the county administration are said to have provided a motive for the murder. The prosecutor alleged that German was working on another story at the time of his death.

The trial featured testimonies from forensic experts who found Telles’ DNA under the victim’s fingernails. Additionally, video evidence showed a suspect driving a maroon SUV similar to one seen being washed by Telles post the murder. Despite the intense proceedings, German’s family members, present throughout the trial, have chosen not to publicly address the matter. Telles, facing a potential life sentence, is expected to testify in his defense next week, with prosecutors not pursuing the death penalty in the case.
