Cold-stunned sea turtles make their way back to the Atlantic waters near Florida

JUNO BEACH, Fla. — On Tuesday, eight green sea turtles were safely returned to the Atlantic Ocean after undergoing rehabilitation for almost a month following an unusual cold snap that brought snowfall to northern Florida. This weather phenomenon left many turtles suffering from a condition known as cold stunning.

A total of 17 turtles were rescued from the chilly waters of Florida’s northeastern Atlantic Coast last month and brought to the Loggerhead Marinelife Center, located in Juno Beach, where they received the necessary care to recover.

According to Dr. Heather Barron, the lead veterinarian at the center, “The cold really suppresses their immune system because they are reptiles, and their body temperature is taken from the surrounding temperature of the water,” highlighting the significant impact of the cold on these creatures.

Snowfall reached as far south as northern Florida, a rarity for the region, leading to frigid conditions that affected both wildlife and residents. Since the initial rescue, numerous other turtles have been brought to the Loggerhead center, prompting concerns about capacity as other facilities across the state also began to overflow with rescued turtles.

The dedicated veterinary team has been working hard to treat the turtles using antibiotics, fluids, and intravenous nutrition. Cold stunning inhibits the mobility of sea turtles and results in extreme lethargy, making rehabilitation essential. Fortunately, most of these turtles are predicted to be released back into their natural habitat in the coming weeks.

In conjunction with their rescue efforts, the Loggerhead Marinelife Center is gearing up to welcome more than 15,000 guests for its 20th Annual TurtleFest this weekend. This free event aims to promote ocean conservation, offering engaging educational exhibits and activities centered around marine life.
