This is where the ‘city destroyer’ asteroid could hit earth

Astronomers are keeping a close eye on asteroid 2024 YR4, a massive space rock dubbed the “city destroyer,” as new data suggests a 2% chance of impact with Earth in seven years. While that may sound like a small probability, the potential devastation makes it a serious concern.

If asteroid 2024 YR4 were to collide with Earth, current predictions suggest possible impact locations across:

  • Central Asia
  • Eastern Europe
  • The Indian subcontinent

However, the exact point of impact remains highly uncertain, as its trajectory continues to shift due to various gravitational influences.

The power of a potential strike

Scientists estimate that if YR4 does hit Earth, it would release energy equivalent to an 8-megaton nuclear blast, capable of leveling an entire metropolitan area. The force would be significantly stronger than the largest nuclear bomb ever tested, raising concerns about the potential devastation it could cause.

Monitoring and mitigation

NASA and international space agencies are actively tracking YR4’s movement to refine predictions and determine if mitigation strategies may be necessary. While the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission proved that deflecting asteroids is possible, time constraints could make intervention challenging if the impact risk increases.

For now, experts urge the public not to panic, as the vast majority of asteroids with potential Earth impacts eventually pass safely by. However, scientists remain vigilant, ensuring that if action is needed, humanity will be ready.
