At least two people have been shot at the Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl parade, sending panic through the massive crowds celebrating the team’s championship win.
The shooting unfolded at 23rd and Spring Garden Streets, less than half a mile from where Eagles players were celebrating in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Police have not confirmed the motive or whether any suspects are in custody.
Early reports indicate that one victim was shot in the leg and rushed to the hospital as first responders navigated through a sea of paradegoers. Aerial footage from CBS News captured an ambulance trying to push through the packed streets.
Upwards of one million people were expected to descend on Philadelphia for Friday’s celebrations, marking a massive turnout for the Eagles’ landslide victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. Despite the shooting occurring nearby, the parade continued uninterrupted, with players addressing the crowd.
The incident comes just a year after the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade ended in tragedy, with 33 people shot and one person killed in a mass shooting. That attack, which took place near Union Station, saw crowds scatter in terror as gunfire erupted.
This wasn’t the only chaotic moment of the day. Eagles general manager Howie Roseman was left bloodied after being hit in the forehead by an object thrown from the crowd. Meanwhile, defensive back CJ Gardner-Johnson stirred controversy by wearing a sweatshirt mocking Taylor Swift.
The parade kicked off in South Philadelphia before making its way up Broad Street, culminating at the iconic ‘Rocky Steps’ at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. While stars like Jalen Hurts thanked the city for its passionate support, no mention was made of the shooting that had just unfolded nearby.
