California police officer kills man hurling rocks at vehicles

A California state police officer fatally shot a man who was reportedly hurling rocks at passing vehicles, according to official statements.

On Monday afternoon, officers from the California Highway Patrol were dispatched to a location near San Jacinto after receiving complaints about an individual throwing rocks at cars on the roadway. Upon their arrival, officers attempted to engage the man, who responded by directing rocks at them.

The officers initially employed verbal commands and attempted non-lethal methods to de-escalate the situation. However, the man continued to advance towards them, prompting at least one officer to discharge their weapon, resulting in the man being struck by gunfire.

Emergency responders declared him dead at the scene, as reported by the agency involved. Fortunately, there were no injuries to the officers present during this encounter.

The incident has prompted an investigation by the Riverside County Force Investigations Detail, which is operated by the district attorney’s office in conjunction with the sheriff’s department, to look into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
