Brett Rypien’s 3 TD passes lead the Bears to a 21-17 win against the Texans in storm-affected game

In Canton, Ohio, the NFL’s new kickoffs failed to bring excitement to the field as the Chicago Bears secured a 21-17 victory over the Houston Texans in the Hall of Fame game. Brett Rypien shined, throwing three touchdown passes, before the game was cut short due to lightning and heavy rain, with 3:31 left in the third quarter.

The revamped kickoffs, part of the NFL’s initiative to enhance the play, saw none of the eight kickoffs being returned past the 32-yard line, with three brought back to the 26. Despite the rule changes, players highlighted the increased speed and intensity of the game. Tyson Bagent and Davis Mills stepped in as starters, showcasing their skills on the field.

Rypien, the standout of the game, completed 11 of 15 passes for 166 yards, including two touchdown passes to Collin Johnson and one to Tommy Sweeney. On the Texans’ side, Mills impressed with a 10 of 13 completion rate for 102 yards and a touchdown pass.

The atmosphere was electric as fans awaited the induction of favorites like Devin Hester and Andre Johnson into the Hall of Fame. Hester, known for his punt and kickoff returns, will be the first pure returner to enter the Hall of Fame, while Johnson, a Pro Bowl receiver, will be the first Texans player to be inducted.

Among the highlights was the health and performance of Cam Akers, displaying his agility with a catch and a touchdown reception for the Texans. Additionally, Bagent, a former undrafted rookie, showcased his talent in a brief appearance before Rypien took over the reins.

The game, unfortunately, had to be called off early due to inclement weather, but it provided a glimpse of the talent and potential awaiting fans in the upcoming NFL season.
