Brazilian kites pose a danger to lives, prompting calls for a nationwide ban

Two groups of men in Rio de Janeiro engaged in a macho showdown using kites as weapons on rooftops overlooking Ipanema beach. The men were slashing each other’s kites with sharp kite lines known as “cerol.” This activity, known as kite fighting, has resulted in severe injuries and deaths over the years and is now the subject of a bill in Brazil’s Congress seeking to ban the manufacture, sale, and use of these razor-sharp lines nationwide, with violators facing prison time and fines.

Kite fighting is popular in Brazil, particularly in Rio’s favelas, where the tradition of flying kites dates back years. However, the misuse of kite lines has led to accidents, including motorcyclists getting injured or killed due to the lines crossing highways. Several states in Brazil have passed laws to regulate kite lines, and a federal bill to outlaw them nationwide has been approved by Congress’ lower house and is heading for a Senate vote.

Despite the potential dangers, some individuals, including police officers, continue to engage in kite fighting in prohibited areas. The use of kite lines has led to numerous accidents, with thousands of reports of illegal kite line use in Rio state alone. The bill to ban razor-sharp lines aims to prevent further injuries and deaths caused by this activity.

Kite flying has historical significance in Brazil and is recognized as a cultural heritage. Some argue that kites were introduced to Brazil by Portuguese colonizers, while others attribute their use to African origins. Kite flying has been a beloved pastime for children in Brazil, although the traditional methods of making kite lines have evolved into more efficient and dangerous industrially made lines.

While kite flying is a popular hobby for many, the misuse of kite lines has led to tragic consequences, such as severe injuries and fatalities. The bill to outlaw razor-sharp kite lines nationally aims to prevent further harm caused by kite fighting and promote the safe practice of this traditional activity in designated areas.
