Blinken and Lammy land in Kyiv as Ukraine seeks to enhance long-range attacks on Russia

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy visited Kyiv together to discuss Ukraine’s request to use long-range missiles against Russia. The diplomats arrived by train from Poland following a US presidential debate where Ukraine’s war was a topic. Blinken accused Iran of supplying Russia with short-range ballistic missiles, labeling it a significant escalation of the conflict. Ukraine has been seeking approval from the US and Western allies to strike Russian targets, especially after reports of Russia acquiring new weaponry.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal expressed hope for support in acquiring long-range equipment during the meeting with Lammy, describing it as intense. Shmyhal emphasized the importance of being able to destroy military targets prepared for attacks on Ukraine to ensure the safety of civilians and children. He condemned Russia for using weapons from its allies to strike Ukraine and emphasized the need for a proportional response to ensure citizens’ safety. The discussions around Ukraine’s request to strike Russian targets will be part of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s upcoming meeting with President Joe Biden.
Biden has permitted Ukraine to use US-provided missiles in self-defense but with limitations to prevent further escalation of the conflict. The joint visit by Blinken and Lammy signifies US-UK support for Ukraine ahead of anticipated Russian attacks in the coming winter. Russian airstrikes targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure have intensified in recent weeks, posing a significant threat. Additionally, the UK announced the banning of 10 ships accused of transporting Russian oil in violation of sanctions, with warnings of detention if they enter British ports.
