Biden exits Washington after five decades, asserting ‘the battle continues’

WASHINGTON — On Monday, Joe Biden concluded a political journey that spanned over five decades, promising that his dedication to public service would continue despite his exit from the presidency. As he prepared to leave for a more relaxed life in California with his family, he emphasized, “We’re not leaving the fight.”

Biden’s farewell came shortly after he witnessed his successor, Republican President Donald Trump, make a bold statement during his inaugural address, vowing to “completely and totally reverse” all that Biden accomplished during his administration.

In the final moments before the transfer of power took place at noon, Biden extended gestures of goodwill towards Trump, a contrast to the tension evident when he ousted Trump from the Oval Office four years prior. Notably, Trump contested his loss in the 2020 election and did not acknowledge Biden’s victory during his own inauguration in 2021.

The frigid day began with Biden and his wife, Jill, welcoming Trump and his wife, Melania, for a customary tea gathering at the White House on Inauguration Day. Biden greeted Trump with the words, “Welcome home.”

After their meeting, the two political rivals, who have experienced notable animosity in the past, shared a limousine ride to the Capitol, where Trump was officially sworn in as the 47th president. During his inaugural speech, Trump characterized the recent election as a mandate to “completely and totally reverse a horrible betrayal,” referring to Biden’s term. As he spoke, Biden sat in the front row, maintaining an impassive expression.

Simultaneously, as Trump delivered his address, White House staff were busy clearing the last of Biden’s possessions in preparation for the Trump family’s return to the residence, which included redecorating the Oval Office.

By afternoon, photographs of Trump adorned the walls of the press offices, which had previously been empty after most staff members wrapped up their governmental duties.

Following Trump’s remarks, he and Melania escorted Biden and Jill outside to a waiting Marine helicopter stationed on the Capitol grounds, set to take them to Joint Base Andrews for a farewell celebration with his supporters and staff.

Biden expressed gratitude, stating, “We couldn’t have done anything we did without you. No president gets to choose the moment they enter history, but they get to choose the team they enter history with, and we chose the best damn team in the world.” He acknowledged that although many may feel “knocked down” by the circumstances, resilience is key.

He encouraged his team, saying, “We’re leaving office. We’re not leaving the fight,” urging them to maintain their engagement. Biden even light-heartedly commented on Trump’s speech, chuckling, “We heard the inaugural address today. We got a lot more to do.” He concluded with the sign of the cross, prompting laughter among his audience.

Together with the First Lady, he approached the familiar blue-and-white Air Force plane that once carried him as president, departing for Santa Ynez, California.
