WASHINGTON — On Saturday, President Joe Biden celebrated Pope Francis by awarding him the Presidential Medal of Freedom with distinction, the highest civilian honor bestowed by the president. He described the pontiff as “a light of faith, hope, and love that shines brightly across the world.”
Initially, Biden was set to present this prestigious medal to Pope Francis in person in Rome during what would be one of his last international trips as president. However, he chose to cancel the plans, prioritizing the need to oversee the wildfire situation in California instead.
According to the White House, Biden conferred the honor during a phone conversation with the pope, where they also engaged in discussions focused on global peace initiatives and addressing humanitarian concerns.
This instance marks the sole occasion during Biden’s presidency where he conferred the medal with distinction. Notably, he himself had previously received this recognition while serving as vice president, awarded by then-President Barack Obama in an unexpected ceremony eight years back. That event was unique, as it represented the only time Obama presented that specific version of the medal throughout his administration.
The commendation for Pope Francis emphasizes his unwavering commitment to assisting the less fortunate. It highlights him as “a loving pastor” who enthusiastically engages with children about faith, as well as a formidable educator who urges action for peace and environmental protection. The citation notes his inclusive approach, reaching out to people of various beliefs.
