Bengals’ Trey Hendrickson Allowed to Explore Trade

All-Pro edge rusher Trey Hendrickson, who led the NFL in sacks this past season, has been given permission by the Cincinnati Bengals to explore trade options, according to two individuals familiar with the matter. These sources shared the information confidentially due to the sensitive nature of personnel decisions.

Hendrickson, whose exemplary performance included 17.5 sacks last season for the second consecutive year, expressed his gratitude in a public statement. “Representing Cincinnati over the past four years has been an honor and privilege,” he said. “I love this city and organization, and I appreciate the chance to explore my options.”

Since joining the Bengals in 2021, Hendrickson has amassed 57 sacks, placing him third in the league over the past four years. Prior to his tenure in Cincinnati, he spent four seasons with the New Orleans Saints. Last year, Hendrickson had also sought a trade prior to the NFL Draft, but his request was not approved by the team.

The Bengals face a challenging task in attempting to manage contracts for their key players, including wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, who are both poised for significant contract extensions. Despite the challenge, Bengals director of player personnel, Duke Tobin, expressed optimism regarding the situation. “We have a lot of fantastic players, and we’ve managed our cap well,” Tobin said. “Our goal is to re-sign these guys, reward them, and continue building a strong team.”

This week, Higgins was designated with the franchise tag for the second time, while Chase is positioned to become the highest-paid non-quarterback player following leading performances in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdown catches in 2024. In light of the recent extension snagged by Raiders edge rusher Maxx Crosby, who secured a three-year, $106.5 million deal with substantial guarantees, the market dynamics for top-tier players like Chase and Hendrickson have shifted significantly.

The Bengals are also on the lookout for additional defensive line support following the announcement of Sam Hubbard’s retirement. Hubbard, who dedicated his entire seven-year career to Cincinnati, has left a prominent gap on the team’s defensive line. As the Bengals navigate these challenges, the task of balancing their roster financially and competitively remains at the forefront.
