Back-to-school horror: Shots, deaths and panic at High School north of Atlanta–shooter captured and identified

In a tragic incident at Apalachee High School in the small town of Winder, four lives were lost—two students and two teachers—when a 14-year-old student opened fire, unleashing a hail of bullets. The shooter, identified as Colt Gray, was also a student at the school. After being confronted by police officers who quickly arrived on the scene, Gray surrendered without resistance and was taken into custody.

In addition to the fatalities, nine others were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Among the injured was David Phenix, a coach and special education teacher, who was struck in the foot and hip. His daughter, Katie, shared the news on social media, expressing the family’s relief that he survived.

As the chaotic and terrifying scene unfolded, students were evacuated from the school buildings, many of them running into the arms of their weeping parents, still in shock from the ordeal. The search for other possible victims continued well into Wednesday afternoon, adding to the atmosphere of fear and uncertainty.

Disturbingly, it was revealed that the school administration had received a phone call prior to the massacre, warning that Apalachee High School was only the first target in a series of planned attacks on other schools. This revelation has left the community on edge, grappling with the possibility of further violence.

The horrific event has drawn condemnation from leaders across the nation, including Vice President Kamala Harris, who denounced the mass shooting during a campaign appearance. As the country mourns yet another senseless tragedy, the statistics remain grim: 527 people have already lost their lives in mass shootings—defined as incidents with at least four victims—this year alone.
