Arizona Tribe Enacts Curfew Due to Crime Concerns

PHOENIX — The Gila River Indian Community in Arizona has imposed a temporary curfew for its youth members following a concerning rise in violent activities in the area. The curfew, aimed at individuals under the age of 18, commenced on Tuesday and has been set to last nearly two weeks, beginning each evening at 7 p.m. and concluding at 5 a.m., effective until March 9.

In announcing this public safety measure, Stephen Roe Lewis, the governor of the Gila River Indian Community located just south of Phoenix, emphasized his commitment to safeguarding the younger members of the community. “Taking action to protect our youth is paramount, and I urge everyone in the community to report any suspicious or criminal activities to the Gila River Police Department,” Governor Lewis expressed in a statement shared on social media.

Coinciding with the curfew announcement was an incident involving gunfire within the community, as noted by a report from the Gila River Police Department. In the previous month, authorities documented multiple cases including at least four missing persons, 65 assault cases, and 17 drug-related offenses. However, the details regarding the severity of the crime spike remain unclear, as does the influence of a singular incident that may have prompted this decision by the tribal leadership.

Both the police department and tribal representatives have opted not to provide additional comments on the situation. According to the curfew directive, individuals who neglect to adhere to the curfew could encounter both civil and criminal repercussions. This also extends to adults found to be responsible for a minor’s infringement of the curfew.

The mandate allows for certain exceptions, such as emergencies, work obligations, school activities, or if the minor is accompanied by a parent or guardian. Previous safety measures enacted by the tribe include a prohibition on dances implemented last year following the tragic shooting of a tribal police officer, and the injury of another, during their response to a disturbance call within one of the tribal community’s districts.
