Ariel Winter Leaves LAโAnd Finally Finds Peace After a Life of Pain
Ariel Winter is no longer staying quiet.
The beloved former Modern Family star has stepped forward in a deeply emotional interview to reveal why she left Los Angeles for good, opening up about the trauma, abuse, and years of bullying that nearly broke her.
Now 27, Winter is no longer the shy middle child on TV, but a woman whoโs survived an unthinkable past โ and is using her platform to fight for others.
โItโs just my entire childhood,โ she says. โItโs a really deep, painful, sore part for me thatโs so much deeper and bigger than Iโve ever felt ready to talk about.โ
From Child Star to Target: The Dark Side of Fame
Ariel Winter began acting at just four years old, growing up in front of America on the hit sitcom Modern Family. But behind the laughs, her reality was dark.
While her character Alex Dunphy was book-smart and quiet, Ariel was endlessly scrutinized online by media and strangers alike โ mostly for her appearance.
โIt was just everywhere,โ she recalls. โEvery headline I read about myself said I looked terrible, or fat, or pregnant. And I was 14.โ
She says the bullying shattered her self-worth. The pain was constant.
โI understood what it was like to be hated. I was a target, no matter what I was going through.โ
No Safe Space at Home: Family Trauma Comes to Light
Even worse than the public abuse was what was happening at home.
At just 14, Ariel was removed from her motherโs custody by the Department of Child and Family Protective Services after allegations of abuse. She was placed in the care of her older sister Shanelle Gray, who eventually became her legal guardian.
In 2016, at 17, Winter was legally emancipated โ officially declared an adult โ and cut all ties with her mother.
โI had a great rest of my teenage years thanks to being under my sisterโs custody,โ she says.
But the damage from her childhood never fully disappeared.
Why She Left LA: Too Many Bad Memories
After Modern Family ended in 2020, Ariel and her longtime boyfriend Luke Benward decided to make a life-altering move: leave Los Angeles.
โI didnโt leave the industry,โ she clarifies. โI just left the city of LA. It holds some not-great memories for me.โ
Sheโs still acting, producing, and even developing a cooking show โ but she wanted a fresh start, far from the place where so much pain happened.
โIโd never lived anywhere else. And I thought, why not?โ
From Fame to Quiet Healing: A New Life Takes Shape
Now, far from Hollywoodโs flashing lights, Ariel is living a quiet, healing life. She cooks, works on new creative projects, and spends time with her six (yes, six!) rescue dogs.
Her days are calmer. Her purpose is stronger.
โMy journey to figuring things out and healing is now through helping other people. Thatโs all I care about.โ
A New Mission: Fighting Predators and Protecting Children
In a powerful and unexpected twist, Ariel has also become an advocate against online sexual predators.
After watching the docuseries Undercover Underage, she reached out to the organization SOSA (Safe From Online Sex Abuse) โ and now works with them to expose online predators and help bring them to justice.
She says her work is deeply personal.
โIโve been that kid. I was preyed upon online so many times.โ
Earlier this year, she described herself as a โvictim of grooming online and CSA [child sex abuse]โ in a social media post โ but has chosen not to go into further detail.
What matters now, she says, is using her voice to help others.
A Survivor Who Refuses to Be Defined by Pain
Ariel knows the world sees her as a survivor. And yes, she lived through a lot.
But she wants her story to be about more than just what she endured.
โTechnically, yes, Iโm a survivor. But calling me that takes away from what Iโm here for, which is to help others.โ
Her fight now focused on change โ through advocacy, awareness, and love.
From Pain to Power: Ariel Winterโs New Purpose
With therapy, distance, and strength, Ariel Winter has transformed her pain into purpose. Sheโs taking control of her life, one healing step at a time.

She left a toxic city behind
-
Sheโs reclaiming her voice
-
Sheโs saving lives by fighting online predators
-
And she determined to make the world safer for the next generation
