Pope Francis Receives Prayers from Argentines in Rome

ROME — Amid heartfelt prayers from people worldwide, Pope Francis continues to receive medical treatment for double pneumonia, the Vatican confirmed Wednesday. Despite being in critical condition, the Vatican pushes forward with its duties, including the announcement of new ecclesiastical appointments and a fresh initiative to boost church donations.

The Vatican shared hopes of soon releasing the results of a CT scan conducted Tuesday to assess the condition of the Pope’s complex lung infection. Ever since the 88-year-old church leader was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on February 14 due to worsening bronchitis, keen observers have been monitoring his health. Despite living with chronic lung disease, Pope Francis manages to work from his hospital room, maintaining a peaceful night and receiving therapy from his armchair on Wednesday.

While doctors caution that he is not out of danger, they note that he has not experienced further respiratory issues since the weekend, highlighting some positive aspects of his recovery. The Vatican’s operations persist, with announcements on Wednesday about the Pope appointing four new bishops and approving a strategic fundraising plan aimed at addressing the Holy See’s long-standing financial issues.

These decisions, likely agreed upon by Francis before his hospitalization, pointedly show his continued influence in Vatican governance. Outside the hospital, streams of well-wishers gather at the statue of St. John Paul II near Gemelli hospital, offering candles and cards in a symbol of hope and healing. This spot has turned into a pilgrimage site, particularly for church groups visiting for the Vatican’s Holy Year.

Bishop Gerardo Villalonga led a contingent from Menorca, Spain, emphasizing the importance of solidarity when a family member is unwell. The dean of the College of Cardinals took center stage Wednesday evening by leading a prayer vigil in St. Peter’s Square. Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, whose term was recently extended by Pope Francis, plays a crucial role within the conclave system in selecting future popes.

In Argentina, the Church and community hold special masses, channeling prayers for Pope Francis’ recovery. Cardinal Baldassarre Reina officiated a mass at the Argentine church in Rome on Tuesday, symbolizing a unified call from the Pope’s homeland. Reverend Fernando Laguna expressed an emotional connection, wishing to comfort the Pope through spiritual embrace.

Sister Nilda Trejo, an Argentine nun, shared her ongoing prayers for Pope Francis, acknowledging his challenges with health and communication. She noted his efforts to engage with the faithful, demonstrating his commitment despite his difficulties speaking publicly.
