Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, made an announcement on Friday that their home football game against Liberty scheduled for Saturday had been canceled due to severe weather caused by Tropical Storm Helene impacting the area. The heavy rains in the North Carolina mountains had led to flooding in the town of Boone, prompting local authorities to declare a state of emergency on Thursday.
The nonconference football game was supposed to kick off at 3:30 p.m. EDT but will not be rescheduled, according to the university. In addition to the football game cancellation, App State also called off a home field hockey match against Bellarmine that was set to take place on Friday.
Tropical Storm Helene made landfall in a sparsely populated area of Florida on Thursday night with sustained winds of 140 mph (225 kph). Despite hitting a less populated region, the storm’s impact extended for hundreds of miles northward, affecting various states with severe weather conditions.
Furthermore, the Nashville Predators had to postpone their preseason NHL game against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday due to severe weather conditions as well. The game has been rescheduled to take place on October 7th.
