NEW YORK — An attorney representing Sean “Diddy” Combs in the ongoing sex trafficking case has expressed the desire to withdraw from the defense team.
On Thursday, defense attorney Anthony Ricco submitted documentation to the federal court in Manhattan indicating that he can no longer effectively serve as Combs’ counsel, stating that “under no circumstances can I continue to effectively serve as counsel.”
Ricco, who is one of six lawyers assisting Combs, did not disclose any specific reasons for his decision. For Ricco to officially step away from the case, the court needs to approve his request.
Combs, aged 55, has entered a not guilty plea to the sex trafficking charges filed against him following his arrest in September. Currently, he is being held without bail as he awaits a trial set to begin on May 5.
According to federal prosecutors, Combs allegedly utilized his wealth and influence to manipulate female victims, as well as male sex workers, into participating in drug-influenced sexual acts. Additionally, he reportedly employed tactics of blackmail and violence in an effort to intimidate and threaten these individuals. Combs is also confronting multiple lawsuits related to sexual assault claims.
Ricco mentioned that he had discussed his departure with Combs’ lead defense attorney and assured that this decision would not result in any postponement of the upcoming trial for Combs.
