American Airlines briefly grounded nationwide, adding to Holiday travel chaos

American Airlines flights were cleared to resume Tuesday morning following a brief nationwide grounding caused by a systemwide technical issue.

Just before 7 a.m. Eastern, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered a temporary halt to all American Airlines flights in the U.S. at the carrier’s request. The airline cited a technical problem affecting its entire system—a major disruption with millions of passengers preparing for holiday travel.

Frustrated Travelers Left Waiting

In response to mounting complaints on social media, American Airlines reassured passengers, saying, “Our team is currently working to rectify this. Your continued patience is appreciated.” However, the airline has yet to release an official statement detailing the issue, and emails seeking clarification have gone unanswered.

The FAA’s website confirmed American Airlines had requested a “nationwide groundstop” impacting not only its flights but also those operated by its subsidiary carriers.

Timing Adds to Holiday Travel Stress

The grounding came at a critical time, with holiday travel surging. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) estimates screening 40 million passengers through January 2, heightening frustration as millions rely on air travel during the busiest season of the year.

American Airlines has since resolved the issue, and flights have resumed, though the brief disruption may still lead to delays throughout the day.
