All Planets Align in February’s Night Sky

NEW YORK — Towards the end of February, skywatchers can witness a spectacular event known as a planetary parade, with seven planets making their appearance. However, not all of them will be easily visible to the unaided eye.

Such events occur when several planets seem to align in the night sky, although they are not arranged in a perfect line but rather positioned closely on one side of the sun. This astronomical occurrence is fairly common, happening at least once a year, depending on how many planets participate. NASA notes that parades featuring four or five planets visible without using special equipment occur every few years.

In a similar celestial event last June, only two planets were viewable with the naked eye. Earlier in January, six planets were visible, with four discernible without any optical aid. This time, Mercury, albeit faint, joins the line-up.

During this month, Venus, Mars, and Jupiter will stand out and be easily spotted by the naked eye. Meanwhile, Saturn and Mercury, being close to the horizon, might pose a challenge to see due to their dimness. For those equipped with binoculars or telescopes, glimpses of Uranus and Neptune are possible.

For the best chance to see these planets, it’s recommended to venture outside on a clear night after the sun has set. The planets will appear more luminous compared to the stars, and Mars will be distinguishable by its reddish-orange hue. Utilizing stargazing apps can offer guidance in locating different planets.

As the weeks pass, these planets will gradually recede from view as spring takes over.
